Josef Mengele

Dr. Josef Mengele was born on March 16, 1911, he was the eldest of three sons of Karl
and Walburga Mengele. He studied philosophy at Munich and medicine at Frankfurt University.

Flag Schutzstaffel.svgHe joined the Nazi party in 1937, then in 1938 went to the SS. In 1942 he was wounded at the Russian front and was pronounced unfit for duty. He later then volunteered to go to the concentration camps, and was sent to the death camp Auschwitz. Dr. Josef Mengele was then nicknamed "the Angel of Death", and became the surviving symbol of Hitler's "Final Solution".

Experimentation

Dr. Josef Mengele's experiments were by far one of the most
gruesome experiments carried out throughout the worlds history. He is most famous for his experiments performed on twins, they were performed to show the similarities and differences in the genetics of twins. From 1943 to 1944 he performed experiments on nearly 1,500 sets of imprisoned twins at Auschwitz.

The doctor was fascinated by people with unique traits ranging from eye color, twins and people with physical handicaps.

1) What was Dr. Mengele's nickname?
2)Why do you think he took an interest on experimenting with twins?

  1. 1. His nickname was 'the angel of death'.
    2. To see how doing the same thing to twins affected them.

  2. 1. His nickname was "the Angel of Death".
    2. He probably took an interest because they are so similar he wanted to see how just a little bit of variables can effect them a person differently.
